Christmas time is here again… and so is the return of the third annual Slow Food Christmas Market at the Southbank from the 19 – 22 December. While the mighty Borough still may reign supreme, the increasing regularity of the Slow Food Market is as welcome as the mulled wine they’ll be doling out to shivering shoppers.
London’s food market scene has been thriving, with new markets appearing faster than you can say “Neal’s Yard Dairy“. There’s the Real Food Market in Covent Garden with everything from SJ Frederick and Sons free range Anglais chicken to seasonal foliage for decoration. Or for those looking for a gut-busting lunch, there’s the Devonshire Square Farmers’ Market in the City and the Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury.
The Slow Food Market at the Southbank however caters to all foodies, from gift buyers to lunchtime dwellers and those buying their Christmas feast. And uniquely, it’s guaranteed that everything tastes good and is produced in a clean and safe way that doesn’t harm the environment.
For those wanting to stock up for the big day, there’s Richard Hayward Oysters. Along with the titular Colchester natives, they sell fish, seafood, and free-range geese and turkey. Fresh pork and beef is available from Northfield Farm, while Kent-based Game For Everything has… you guessed it, game.
Along with sipping mulled wine, get the seasonal goodwill flowing by visiting Mersea Island Vineyard and Brewery. Those with a sweet tooth should visit Manna Cakes, while Cornish Meadow preserves make perfect gifts. There’s also some Italian treats available from La Ludesana and Gastronomica.
After all that, treat yourself to some takeaway from either The Veggie Table (perfect for our non meat-eating friends) or some bratwurst or Rana Santa hog roast for our carnivore comrades.
Seasons eatings!
