If you’d like to introduce your mother to the joys of the Slow Life, what better time to do it than on Mother’s Day? By drawing on your own lifestyle and the things that make you happy, you’re bound to find her a thoughtful present that will see her through the year feeling loved.
A knitting lesson
Knitting and crafting in general almost seem to have skipped a generation and it’s now mostly younger people enjoying the calming, satisfying experience of making stuff from scratch. If you’ve benefited from learning a craft and think Mum is missing out, why not treat her to a lesson? There are venues all over the country putting on classes now, and it’s a particularly great choice if she also needs some company. Details of few of them can be found here.
Spa Day
The art of slowing down is often hard for ‘beginners’ to master in their daily life, so a good way to introduce Mum to the Slow Life might be to take her out of her daily routine and send her off to a place where relaxing is pretty much compulsory! There are thousands of spa packages to choose from at Wahanda, where you can buy vouchers to redeem in almost major spa in the country. So if your Mum doesn’t mind being seen in a dressing gown or getting cosy in the sauna, check out these Mother’s Day Deals that have been specially selected.
Artisan kitchenware
Some of our favourite artisan-made products make fantastic gifts that look great and come into very good use around the home. Emma Bridgewater has a wonderful selection of traditionally-made, hand-printed pottery to choose from, including a special Mother’s Day range – we particularly like ‘Happiness for Mum is a cup of tea in bed’. Look out for her decorative designs in gift and homeware stores on the high street.
Make a simnel cake
You might have heard of simnel cake being referred to as an Easter tradition, but the origins actually have more to do with Mothering Sunday. In medieval times, young girls in service would bake one to be taken home to their mothers on their day off.
Few mothers I know would object to the revival of this practice, so if you’re dropping in on Mum this weekend, why not prepare one to bring along with you? It’s a delicious, fruity cake that harks back to the days when dried, preserved fruits were the most plentiful sweet treats around at this time of the season; there’s a simple recipe here.
Posh artisan chocs
No Mother’s Day ideas list would be complete without chocolate, so do her a favour and get her some well-made ones! We’re currently getting excited about Lick The Spoon, who’ve won all manner of awards, and deservedly so.
