Eataly Slow Food market: buy, eat and learn

Eataly, the world’s first Slow Food supermarket opened its doors in Turin in 2007 with the aim to create a new paradigm in the world of food distribution and the marketing of high-quality artisan products, inspired by key concepts such as sustainability, responsibility and sharing.

Supported by the City of Turin, the Province of Turin and the Region of Piedmont, Eataly shows that it is possible to offer high-quality foods to the broad public at sustainable prices while also communicating how the food is produced and introducing consumers to the people and the stories behind the best of Italian food and wine.

The market is structured around areas dedicated to specific products (cured meats and cheeses, meats, fruit and vegetables, fish, coffee, baked goods, general goods, non-alcoholic beverages and a wine cellar as well as a confectionery) paired with informal themed restaurants featuring products protected by the Slow Food snail, paired with great wines from Italy and abroad. You can even learn how to cook the dishes on offer.

With education about food and food production very much a part of the market’s philosophy, there is themed library housing around 1,000 books from the world of food and numerous specialist magazines. Plus there are also tasting rooms, event classrooms and areas devoted to topics like the importance of seasonality for produce, the sensory excellence of typical Piedmont products and how wine and beer are made.
