The Slow Food movement is gaining a big following in Ireland, where a long tradition of artisan and local producers give us much to celebrate. Burren Slow Food Festival in County Clare is one of the main attractions for fans of Slow Food, and it’s taking place later this month, from 21-23 May.
Now in its fourth year, the Slow Food Festival promises a delicious day out for the whole family, with an exciting programme of events including cookery demonstrations, talks, dinners, a farmer’s market, barbecue and various children’s workshops.
For those who can tear themselves away from the locally-produced queen cakes at the farmer’s market or the barbecued Clare beef, locally sourced from the hills of Mullagh, there’ll be an inspiring programme of talks from local celebrities and stalwarts of the Irish Slow Food movement.
One major topic for discussion is the importance of water, both as an ingredient and as a commodity to be respected and harvested sustainably. Alexander Bell, a world expert on water issues will be giving the talk on Saturday 22nd, in one of three free talks. There’s a strong emphasis on the environmental impact of the food industry at this year’s event, which will be opened by Brian Meany of the Green Party.
Also on the Saturday, visitors are encouraged to visit the Wild Honey Inn, Lisdoonvarna, for a lavish Slow Food dinner. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment!
