It’s Organic Fortnight in Blighty right now, so expect to see Londoners partying in carrot costumes and going to work in roman togas made from cotton bedsheets.
Not really. Organic Fortnight is a rather more sedate affair, but well worth taking part in all the same.
Now, organic veggies have been around so long they’ve had their own scandal and comeback already (for a moment it was claimed they were a con, though lawks knows how not slowly poisoning farmers to death is a con). Organic cotton bedsheets have also been on more than a few wedding lists too. But organic everything else? Well, it mostly remains a lucky find in a specialist shop.
Organic Fortnight, which started Friday and runs until the 17th, aims to correct that by raising awareness of the range of organic products available and the benefits of buying them. Hands up who knew you can buy organic lubricant, for starters, and I mean the bedroom not the bicycle kind. No, didn’t think so.
Organised annually by the Soil Association, a UK body that promotes planet-friendly food and farming, the theme of this year’s campaign is “Choose organic every day”. You can visit the Soil Association website for ideas, from visiting organic farms to throwing an organic dinner party.
Organic Fortnight incorporates an Organic Food Festival too. Held in Bristol, on the harbourside, this weekend (September 11 & 12), the event brings together a huge variety of organic fare with hundreds of stalls selling delicious food and drink, organic clothes and beauty products.
