Slow shopping Christmas gift guide Slow shopping Christmas gift guide Slow shopping Christmas gift guide

Whoever coined the phrase “it’s better to give than receive” obviously didn’t have to contend with the soul-destryoing experience that is Christmas shopping. But, hark! There is an alternative…

To market, to market
Markets are the perfect place to nab that gift for anyone notoriously difficult to buy for – you never know what weird and wonderful thing you might find. Whether it’s a local street market or pop-up Christmas fair, support independent producers, find out exactly how your product was made and maybe even have a glass of mulled wine or two. London’s Spitalfields, Borough, Greenwich and Portobello are all recommended.

Don’t miss Slow Food London’s Christmas Market from 19 – 22 December. Check out Time Out and Enjoy England for local listings.

Independent shops
London’s Lamb’s Conduit Street is a glorious place to get your shopping jollies (and they have a cracking pub, The Lamb, to boot). Highlights include food from Kennards, quality British clothes from Folk, jewellery from French’s Dairy, and gifts from Something.

East London’s Columbia Road (Christmas Wednesdays take place on the 16 and 23 December) and Cheshire Street are also both having special Christmas shopping events at their swell of lovely independent boutiques.

Neal’s Yard Cheeses Of The Month
Perfect for the fromage lover in your life (available both in shop and online).

Bamford and Daylesford Organic
Bamford produces clothing, food and beauty products as Bamford and Bamford Women, Daylesford Organic and Bamford Bath & Body, respectively. Most of the products are produced at their Gloucestershire farm (which doubles as a shop and spa), while products are also available from London stores and online.

Fashion-conscience.com
If it’s not possible to shop at local and independent boutiques, sort your sartorial Christmas needs at Fashion-conscience.com, where products are categorised as either organic, vegan, sustainable, fair trade or recycled.

Biome Lifestyle
Get ethical home ware and decorations from the online shop Biome Lifestyle. They even give tips on how to make your own crackers, if you’re so inclined.

Slow! Slow! Slow! Merry Christmas…
