Small is good: Pauline Burrows

Pauline Burrows is an absolutely lovely, teeny-tiny shop headed by an equally lovely, teeny-tiny woman, offering the type of clothes for both men and women that evoke individual, effortless style.

The eponymous shop is located in the groovy Seven Dials area of Covent Garden, with garments made in the UK using traditional methods and techniques. Each piece is expertly cut and constructed on site at her workrooms and studios with beautiful (mostly Italian) fabric.

The shop is a siren call for anyone who likes to go bespoke. Prices start at just £75 (for men’s shirts) and once you’ve been fitted, the pattern will be kept on file ensuring a perfect fit every time you place an order. More than 75% of customers (mostly business folk on the go) ask for more pieces to go with something they have already bought.

Pauline will even post fabric swatches, so customers order new threads wherever they are in the world. Nifty, eh?

One of fashion’s best-kept secrets, Pauline does have a celebrity clientele, although unfortunately for gossip hounds she is far too polite to name names (though we did spot a mention of David Bowie on her website).

Most of her designs come in a massive range of prints and colours. It’s all very timeless, yet strikingly original and individual. Jackets, dresses, suits, trousers, skirts and bridal wear are available along with a small, yet perfectly formed range of cool accessories like jewelry, umbrellas and scarves.

Good things obviously do come in small packages.
