Underground dining Buenos Aires: A Little Saigon restaurant Underground dining Buenos Aires: A Little Saigon restaurant

Every weekend Thuy Lam opens her home to up to 12 guests and turns her Buenos Aires flat into the ‘A Little Saigon’ closed-door restaurant. The underground diner was started in September 2008 to introduce and provide authentic Vietnamese cuisine to Thuy’s Argentinian neighbours.

Born in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, Thuy fled the country as a little girl with her family, and after a year in a refugee camp on an island near Malaysia, finally settled in the United States. Now she is lives in Buenos Aires and has made it her mission to introduce locals to family-style, traditional Vietnamese dishes.

Once you’ve made a reservation (dinner costs 150 pesos per person) you can expect plenty of appetizers - chicken and rice chowder for example – a main course such as sauteed broccoli and cauliflower or grilled pork ribs, as well as desert and drinks (wine, beer, water).

More importantly however you will experience Thuy’s and her husband Ben’s amazing hospitality as they offer you a seat around the huge table in their living room and spoil you with Vietnamese delights all evening.

For those interested in learning more about Vietnamese cooking, Thuy also offers cooking classes where up to four people can learn how to recreate a three course meal and have the unique chance to get Thuy’s family recipes.
