Culture Special: Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco

Craft has not always enjoyed the amount of interest and appreciation that other art forms have, but at San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Folk Art is dedicated to showcasing creative traditions from all around the world.

This small museum, which some have described as ‘San Francisco’s best-kept secret’ is a great place to visit if you enjoy making things in your own time, as there’s so much here that will inspire you.

Exhibitions change frequently, but the main museum space is currently occupied by folk musician and contemporary artist Clare Rojas, whose installation We They, We They displays her bold, colourful canvasses (shown above) and other folk-inspired contemporary art. Originally a printmaker, Rojas uses a wide range of media, including painting, installation and video. The main focus of the exhibition is a large “wall quilt” made up of individual paintings on wood panels.

After exploring the museum, many visitors are tempted to browse the museum store, which houses a huge collection of pieces by local artisans and folk artists from around the world, all of which are available to buy. In fact, you don’t even have to go to San Francisco to be tempted, as there’s an online store with an inspiring range of accessories, jewellery, ornaments and gifts.
