Home style: how to create your own Valentine's boudoir

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and most shops have gone into overdrive flogging cheap cards, even cheaper flowers and pretty much anything heart-shaped. But do we really need all that? After all the day is about love and being in love, so ditch the cheap presents and surprise your loved one with a romantic night in in your very own vintage-inspired boudoir.

No vintage boudoir would be complete without a flurry of frills and smothering of satin. Here we have some great tips on how to transform your everyday bedroom into a passionate vintage playground with a fine selection of handmade and carefully crafted furnishings and accessories

First of all, set the mood with candles. You can easily buy handmade candles over the internet or – even better – make them yourself. If you have left-over bits of wax and half-burnt down candles at home, simply melt them down into a vintage tea cup which you can pick up cheaply in any charity shop. There’s a great tutorial on how to make tea cup candles here.

If you are not keen on candle light, lamp light can be just as sultry for a gorgeous boudoir effect. Forget overhead lighting, a vintage boudoir should be all about long shadows and elegant shapes, just perfect for bringing out the cat in you.

Clare Brown, owner of the divine Vintage-Home and interiors aficionado says, “Soft and ambient lighting is de rigeur for a vintage boudoir so several vintage lamps with pretty shades dotted around the room are perfect; old glass lamps with shades are ideal.” You can buy beautifully crafted vintage table lights here.

Next, soft furnishings are a must. Pillows and satin drapes will take your bedroom from 2010 to 1930 in an instant. The decadent richness of satins, silks, and taffetas are the very epitome of old-Hollywood chic. The exquisite folds and graceful shimmers of the fabric will be just the thing to transform your bedroom into a luscious love-nest. If you can’t find old satin curtains in your local charity shop, then check on eBay. You can either just drape them as a bed spread or make some quick and easy cushion covers.

Once settled in your new vintage abode, get in the mood with a nice drop of bubbly, sipped elegantly of course from antique Champagne glasses. Antique glasses are beautifully crafted, with exquisite workmanship, and fine details. Georgian panel-cut flutes with everted lips on facetted ball-knop stems are wonderful examples of vintage glassware at its most glorious. You can buy antique glasses here.
