We all know to make our homes look festive at Christmas, but decorating for Easter can require a bit more creative thought. This can make the entire process a lot more fun and interesting, of course, particularly if you’ve got young children.
Getting Started
The overall aim is to make the place look fresh, clean and spring-like, so after giving your home a thorough clean, your colour palate should be pastels, plenty of spring greens and pale yellows, and maybe a bit of silver. Think about what you might have used to decorate an Easter bonnet in your youth!
Before you move on to ornaments and other finishing touches, make sure that the rooms you plan to decorate have the right sort of colours visible. You might want to change table cloths, cushions, throws and rugs to fit in with your lighter theme.
Fresh flowers are a crucial part of Easter decoration, so have a look at what flowers are in season now, and drop in on your local garden centre to pick out a few blooms. You might also want to take this opportunity to buy a few new vases: Graham & Green have some lovely ones in stock at the moment, including these delicate ceramic branch-shaped vases.
Branching Out
One Easter decoration that has become a tradition is the Easter twig or branch. This could be anything from a simple tree branch, hoiked out of the garden earlier in the day, to an ornate imitation branch covered in gold leaf. If you’re going for the natural option, you might want to paint the twig white, gold or silver, then mount it in a plant pot or vase to use as a table or room centrepiece. To keep the branch it upright, fill the pot or vase with sand or flower foam.
Next comes the fun part: attaching ornaments. There are plenty of hand-made and artisan decorations to choose from if you don’t have time to make your own, so it’s worth checking out any local independent boutiques. Over at Not On The High Street there are some beautiful faux speckled egg ornaments.
If you want to make and hang your own egg decorations, you might want to try making lace eggs, decorate Styrofoam eggs with colourful paint and glitter or attempt the age-old skill of blowing eggs to make them lightweight and easy to hang. You could also take the easy but effective route and simply attach ribbon to some colourful candy eggs. Make sure you’ve got some pastel-coloured ribbon to hang your creations.
