If you were in Central London last Saturday you might have had a surprise encounter with over four hundred tweed-clad cyclists on their vintage bikes. No, this wasn’t a temporary glitch in the time-space continuum that briefly transported you back to the 1930s, you just happened to have stumbled across the annual London Tweed Run.
The Tweed Run – “a modern bicycle ride with a bit of style” is a group bicycle ride through the centre of London, for which the cyclists are expected to dress in traditional British cycling attire. Tweed suits, plus fours, bowties, cycling capes, and jaunty flat caps are all encouraged.
First held in London in January 2009, the event is organised by London Fixed Gear and Single Speed, an online cycling forum.
If you have missed this year’s run, perhaps start off by getting ready for next year’s event – sartorial perfection does take time and planning. The Tweed Run shop offers a fabulous range of classic cycling attire.
We love the pewter hip flask ( a bit of tipple to calm the nerves – not that we’d ever encourage drink riding), dashing knee-length socks that will go perfectly with knicker bockers and custom-made bike saddle.
