The 21st annual New York Century Bike Tour is happening Sunday, September 12, and it’s not too late to get involved.
The New York City Century Bike Tour is America’s only fully urban ride. You can choose your distance – select from 100, 75, 55, 35, or 15-mile routes. All routes feature stunning views of New York City from the best vantage point; your bike. And it’s almost a cert that you’ll spot a few Jorg & Olifs in the crowd.
The tour links NYC’s world-renowned bridges and beautiful parks to its characterful neighborhoods and iconic waterfronts. It also showcases the growing number of bike routes around the city and each year hopes to provide the springboard commuters need to start cycling to work.
The first NYC Century in 1990 attracted about 200 dedicated NYC cyclists, most of whom were daily bicycle commuters, fighting hard for better conditions for cycling in NYC. Today the ride draws over 6,000 cyclists, from as far away as Germany and the UK.
Roads aren’t closed for the tour, and cyclists must work with the traffic, demonstrating that cycling is a year-round all weathers activity. You do get a police escort, though!
Proceeds from the tour go to Transportation Alternatives, an advocate group for biking, walking and public transport. According to the organisers: “You riding in the New York City Century Bike Tour demonstrates to the world that cycling is safe and fun in New York City.”
The deadline for online registration for the New York Century Bike Tour is Friday, September 10.
