Cycle chic: five cool cycle helmets for him and her

These days those cyclists who wear bicycle helmets do so to protect themselves from serious head injuries caused by falls or accidents. Unfortunately most helmets are hardly what you would call ‘pretty’ or ‘attractive’ and fall into the necessary evil category of biking accessories.

However there are some exceptions to the rule, and jorg&olif have found five examples of very chic cycling helmets worthy of the title ‘accessory’:

1) Danish company Yakkay pioneers a straightforward yet highly effective concept. Simply cover a standard cycling helmet with something a little more exciting. Their range of covers include the Luzern (black faux fur) and the Tokyo (so very Nineties Brit pop) and each type of cover comes in a variety of fabrics and colours so you have plenty to choose from. Although the helmets look more like a fashionable hat, each fully meets the European CE safety standard.

Prices start at around £95.00

2) London-based designer Sawako Furuno has a range of beautiful, feminine helmets. With their girly colours – salmon pink, purple and turquoise – and delicate flower motives these helmets are the perfect biking accessory for her.

Prices start at a  very reasonable £60.00

3) Sports company Bern, which started out in 2005, has developed a range of edgy cool helmets that are suitable for a number of sports from skateboarding to cycling. With different styles for men, women and kids, there are lots of looks to suit every taste.

Prices start at £45.00

4) For the English gentleman we recommend the traditional helmets by Moody & Farrell available at Bobbin Bicyles. Chaps can choose between the Deerstalker (hello Sherlock) and the city gent’s favourite – the bowler hat.

These helmets aren’t cheap at around £195.00 and are perhaps not the safest, but they will sure get you noticed!

5) Pro-tec are another company who cater for snowboarders, skaters and bikers alike. Their cycling helmets are classic and simple in design and suitable for both him and her with a wide variety of colours on offer.

Best of all prices start at £32.00
