We love our bicycles when it comes to getting from A to B without adding to the CO2 levels, but they are more than just a form of transport.
In fact, you don’t even have to take to the open road to reap the benefits of biking; as one of the easiest aerobic exercises around, cycling makes the perfect exercise activity to keep you fit and healthy. A high calorie burner and an inexpensive and low-impact sport, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the slower advantages of bikes as well as their thigh-toning pedal power.
Spinning
An old favourite at the gym and a tough workout, spinning classes involve cycling on stationary bikes for up to an hour as a group, usually with an instructor who will put you through your paces. You’ll have to increase the gears as you go, building up speed and hopefully stamina as well as switching between ‘sprints’, slower climbs and standing as you cycle. High intensity and a great cardio boost, spinning makes an ideal sport for those who need to stay in shape.
PowerBike
New to the market and sure to create a buzz in the fitness world, the PowerBike is the latest idea from the makers of the Power Plate. The unique stationary bike is the first to incorporate vibration training, for an added intensity to traditional indoor cycling. Acceleration training isn’t just about speeding up your workout time; it’s about getting more from the minutes you put in. Requiring no electrical supply and therefore being eco-friendly, the PowerBike uses your own pedalling to generate vibrations and can even be switched off if you need to slow the pace.
Bike rollers and trainers
Already love your bike? No problem. If you want to make the most of the two wheels that you’ve got, you can always buy a roller or bike trainer to turn it into a stationary exercise bike that you can use at home. Bicycle rollers are trickier, since they don’t attach to the frame and so rely on you being able to keep your balance; great toning for the core muscles. Bicycle trainers involve a frame with a clamp to keep your bike steady and secure while you cycle on the spot, as well as creating resistance to give your legs more of a challenge.
