Travel Special: cycle along the River Thames

For what it lacks in cycle paths, London makes up in one of the best natural landmarks for cyclists and walkers: the winding path of the River Thames. Long enough to be a challenge, but not too gruelling for beginners, a ride from East to West (or vice versa) provides some stunning scenery, varied terrain and let’s not forget the truly excellent pubs…

The Thames path itself is much more of a walker’s route, but by going a little bit ‘off piste’ you can journey from one end of the river to the other by bike, with plenty of areas to explore on the way. There are several cycle routes to follow, taking you through parks, along roads and shady embankments.

One popular riverside route is the scenic and bucolic public path between Hammersmith and Putney bridges. This route is particularly great for beginners, as it’s almost entirely traffic-free, and you’ll stay right beside the river most of the way. Further West, heading into Central London, the riverside routes are mostly on roads, but you’ll also pass through Battersea Park and the Chelsea Embankment.

Another option for waterside cycling in London is offered by the city’s canals. Mostly found North of the river, these routes are mostly cycle-friendly, but check the Waterscape site to be sure. If you’d like to cycle a particular part of the Thames, Cycleroute.com has a great tool here that allows you to pick routes all over London, many of them skirting the river.

When you’ve finished your ride and want to reward yourself with a cool and refreshing drink, there are hundreds of riverside watering holes to drop in on for a quick pint. If you’re heading East, The Angelin Rotherhithe is a traditional and atmospheric pub, while those attempting the Putney to Hammersmith route have an excellent selection of pubs along the South bank of the River. If you find yourself getting thirsty anywhere else en route, there’s a comprehensive list of Thameside pubs here.
