Fashion futures: Slow is beautiful

We know that Slow Life is a mindset that we can all achieve – and scenario planning gives us the opportunity to map out the steps for a slower world.

Through the creation of Forum For the Future and Levi Strauss & Co’s latest report, Fashion Futures 2025: Global scenarios for a sustainable fashion industry, we get a brief opportunity to visualise  what life will be like in 2025, through various forecasting scenarios that was the result of much research.

Gazing carefully at the fashion industry of the future in its wider social, political, economic and environmental context, the report concluded with four scenarios: Community couture, Techno-chic, Patchwork planet, and the one that caught jorg&olif’s attention, Slow is beautiful.

“This is a moralistic world of low-carbon, sustainable lifestyles and mindsets.”

While there was no one perfect solution (particularly given that these are scenarios that should be taken with a pinch of salt), it is quite clear that the “Slow is beautiful” scenario was a firm leader for a more harmonious and equitable world. Not only does this scenario provide promise for our desire for Slow Fashion, it also glimpses into consumer behaviour and the business landscape of this Slow Future, suggesting how we have positively responded to core issues of our time, namely climate change.

Vicky Murray, co-author of the report told us that, “All of our scenarios are designed to be plausible visions of how the future could pan out.  But we don’t need to leave it to destiny!  The exciting thing is that we can help shape the future we want.  ‘Slow is beautiful’ shows the incredible opportunities out there for clothing companies to create and drive consumer demand for sustainable fashion and lifestyles.”
