Taking Time: Craft and the Slow Revolution Exhibition

Featuring different crafts as well as film and photography, Taking Time is a Craftspace exhibition currently touring the UK, which is taking as its starting point the issues emerging from the Slow Life movement. The show explores how contemporary craftspeople respond to ideas about slowing down how we work and what we produce, and the importance of contributing to a more sustainable society.

Given that crafts have always called for more local production, and have encouraged us to value where things come from, as well as creating communities and a sense of belonging through being part of a shared activity, the exhibition highlights craftsmakers from different countries, who show in their work and making processes, the value of taking time.

The exhibition features artists such as Judith van den Boom & Gunter Wehmeyer, Gary Breeze, Neil Brownsword,  and Rebecca Early. Also included is a giant wool hanging that will be partly created by visitors, and a project working with local Afro-Carribean elders at Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton with artist Linda Florence, and a project with MA students from Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery.

The exhibition is currently on show in Edinburgh. See www.craftspace.co.uk for further information, the touring schedule, images and podcasts about the exhibition.
