If you can’t bear the thought of using a modern electric razor for your daily shave, enjoy a good pipe and ocasionally take a wry look at the modern world through the steamed-up monocle of a more refined age, then you might actually be a chap.

Since 1999, the Chap Magazine has been championing the rights of that increasingly marginalised and discredited species of Englishman – the gentleman. The Chap believes that a society without courteous behaviour and proper headwear is a society on the brink of moral and sartorial collapse, and it seeks to reinstate such outmoded but indispensable gestures as hat doffing, giving up one’s seat to a lady and regularly using a trouser press.

Grooming is an essential part of the chap’s daily routine. As Chap Magazine points out: “Whether shaving with cut-throat or safety razor, or fastidiously waxing one’s moustache, a welll-groomed visage is the base upon which all sartorial offerings are subsequently placed, and for this reason there must be no compromise on quality. Furthermore, a gentleman surrounded by attractive grooming items which bespeak a more elegant era will be more up to the task of spreading bonhomie and anarcho-dandyism than someone with a bag of Bic razors and a tin of shaving foam.”

To make things easy Chap Magazine has a brilliant little online shop that stocks all the essentials from razors, shaving brushes, shaving soap and pomade to moustache wax and after-shave balm.

The shop not only covers grooming but all aspects of a gentleman’s life from evening wear (black tie or white tie), head wear (caps in tweed or linen), neckwear (ties and scarves), trouser braces and sock suspenders and pipes. All items are of amazing quality and showcase traditional craftsmanship.

So if you are constantly being asked questions such as “Where can I buy a Donegal Tweed cap?” and “Which shops sell sock suspenders?”, now you know.
